CarrierPony vs iMessage

iMessage encrypts end to end between Apple devices and is invisible to set up — it's just Messages. The trade is that your identity, your contact graph, and (by default) your backups live inside Apple's account system. CarrierPony moves all of that back onto your phone.

Honest tradeoffs.
Where iMessage wins
- Zero friction. It's the default. No app to install, no pairing, and everyone with an iPhone is reachable instantly.
- Features. Groups, reactions, effects, SharePlay, seamless SMS/RCS fallback for non-Apple contacts.
- Ecosystem integration. Messages flows across iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Apple handling the multi-device problem.
Where CarrierPony wins
- No account in the loop. iMessage identity is your Apple Account and number. CarrierPony identity is a keypair that exists nowhere but your phone.
- The backup problem, solved by absence. With default iCloud Backup, iMessage history can be readable to Apple. CarrierPony has no cloud backup — only the encrypted export you make yourself.
- Verification as a habit, not a hidden toggle. Every pairing has a safety number front and center.
- Auditable crypto. The engine is open source and checkable against GnuPG, rather than a promise in a security whitepaper.
The verdict.
- Keep iMessage for everyday life — it's excellent default messaging and your contacts are already on it.
- Choose CarrierPony for the subset of conversations that shouldn't touch any account system, with keys and backups entirely in your hands.
- If you stay on iMessage for sensitive threads anyway, turn on Advanced Data Protection and Contact Key Verification. Honest advice is honest advice.
