Frequently asked
I lost my phone. Can you recover my messages?
No — and that's the design working. Your keys existed only on your device (and in your encrypted backup, if you made one). Restore a backup on a new phone to get your identity back. Without a backup, generate a fresh identity and re-pair with your contacts.
My contact says they have a new identity. What should I do?
A reinstall or new phone without a restored backup means a brand-new key, so they'll need to pair with you again. Confirm it's really them over another channel, accept the new pairing, and verify the fresh safety number before continuing anything sensitive.
Why didn't my message arrive instantly?
Delivery depends on the recipient's phone being reachable. The relay holds the sealed envelope and a push notification asks their phone to fetch it; iOS sometimes delays background fetches to save battery. The message arrives when their app next connects.
Can I message someone who doesn't have CarrierPony?
No. Both ends need the app, because both ends need keys. That's what makes it end to end.
How big can file transfers be?
Up to 50 MB per file, encrypted and signed like any message.
Can I use CarrierPony on more than one device?
Your identity moves with your encrypted backup — restore it on a new phone and it's you there too. Contacts and past messages aren't in the backup, so conversations pick up fresh on the new device.
Does blocking tell the other person they're blocked?
No notification is sent. Blocking removes the pairing from your device, so nothing further from them is opened or shown unless you pair again.
Is my existing GnuPG key safe to import?
Yes. Import keeps passphrase protection intact, and the key never leaves the device afterward except in your own encrypted backup.
