CarrierPony vs WhatsApp

Sealed content, unsealed everything else.

WhatsApp deserves credit: it brought Signal-protocol encryption to billions. But encryption of content was never the whole story. WhatsApp knows your number, your contacts, and your patterns. CarrierPony is built so there is nothing equivalent to know.

the short version

WhatsApp encrypts the letter; CarrierPony also shrinks the envelope's paper trail. If your concern is content interception, both do the job. If your concern is who-talks-to-whom sitting in a corporate database, only one of these was designed for that.

At a glance.

Honest tradeoffs.

Where WhatsApp wins

  • Everyone is on it. For much of the world, WhatsApp is messaging. Reach matters, and CarrierPony can't compete on it.
  • Feature depth. Groups, voice and video calls, communities, status, cross-platform, multi-device.
  • Strong content crypto. The Signal protocol underneath is genuinely good, with forward secrecy CarrierPony's OpenPGP model doesn't have.

Where CarrierPony wins

  • No Meta in the middle. There is no corporation, no ad ecosystem, and no growth team attached to your conversations — one indie developer and a relay that deletes what it delivers.
  • No number, no graph. WhatsApp's account and contact discovery build a social graph by design. CarrierPony never learns who you are, let alone who you know.
  • Metadata minimized structurally. What isn't collected can't be analyzed, shared, or breached.
  • Your key, portable. Standard OpenPGP means your identity can come from GnuPG and isn't locked to the app.

The verdict.

  • Keep WhatsApp for reach — the group chats and the relatives who will never install anything else.
  • Choose CarrierPony for the one-to-one conversations where the metadata is as sensitive as the message.
  • If you stay on WhatsApp for sensitive threads, at least enable end-to-end encrypted backups. It's off by default.
